A laptop stand solves one part of a workstation problem by raising the screen. It can create another problem if the built-in keyboard rises with it and becomes the primary input device. For sustained desk work, the useful setup is usually a raised laptop display plus a separate keyboard and pointing device, adjusted together with the chair and work surface.
OSHA’s workstation checklist applies desktop ergonomic principles to laptops used as primary computers and recommends separate input devices. This is general educational guidance, not medical advice. Comfort is individual, and persistent pain or symptoms deserve qualified professional attention.
Set the person before the stand
Do not choose stand height in isolation. Begin with a supported sitting or standing position:
- feet supported;
- shoulders relaxed;
- elbows near the body;
- forearms roughly level with the keyboard;
- wrists in a neutral, comfortable position;
- head balanced rather than reaching forward.
Then position the screen so text is readable without leaning. OSHA’s general workstation guidance places the top of the monitor at or just below eye level for many users, with enough viewing distance to avoid leaning. Bifocals, progressive lenses, screen size, eyesight, and task can make a lower position more comfortable.
The goal is not to force a universal angle. It is to preserve a neutral head and neck position while keeping text comfortably visible.
Why a separate keyboard matters
Raising the laptop raises its keyboard. If you continue typing on it, your shoulders may lift, elbows may move away from the body, and wrists may bend. Lowering the laptop to fix the keyboard position lowers the screen again.
A separate keyboard breaks that connection. Place it directly in front, close enough that elbows remain near the body. Put the mouse or trackball beside it at a similar height. A compact keyboard can reduce the sideways reach to a mouse, but it should still provide the keys and spacing your work requires.
For short, mobile sessions, compromise is inevitable. Change position, limit duration, and avoid treating a temporary hotel or couch setup as a permanent workstation.
Choose an adjustment range, not one advertised height
Measure the approximate vertical difference between the laptop’s current screen position and the comfortable target. Consider the screen’s center and top edge, not only how high the base rises.
A fixed stand can be stable and simple when one user, laptop, desk, and chair stay together. An adjustable stand is useful when:
- multiple people share the desk;
- sitting and standing positions alternate;
- laptop sizes change;
- an external monitor needs alignment;
- the desk or chair has limited adjustment.
More joints can also mean more movement. Check whether the stand can be adjusted easily enough for your routine but remains stable while the laptop is used.
Viewing distance changes the required height
Moving a screen farther away can reduce the angle at which you look downward, but text may become too small. Moving it closer can improve readability while encouraging the head to move forward.
OSHA’s checklist gives roughly 18–20 inches or an arm’s length as a general monitor-distance reference. Treat that as a starting range. Adjust operating-system scaling and text size rather than leaning toward a distant high-resolution display.
The stand depth also matters. A large base, hinge, or front lip can prevent the screen from reaching the intended distance or can consume space needed by the external keyboard.
Stability and device retention
Match the stand to the laptop’s width, depth, and weight. Check:
- supported device size and weight;
- width and placement of support rails;
- height of the front retaining lip;
- rubber or other anti-slip surfaces;
- resistance to tipping when the screen is opened;
- stability at the highest adjustment.
A tall, narrow stand creates more leverage. A heavy laptop placed high can move when the desk is bumped. If the laptop will be opened, closed, or touched frequently, test whether the stand’s geometry supports those motions.
The retaining lip should prevent sliding without pressing on the wrists, covering ports, or blocking the laptop’s front edge. Thick cases or unusually shaped chassis may not sit as expected.
Ventilation and materials
Identify the laptop’s intake and exhaust locations. A stand should not block vents or press soft material into them. Open designs can improve airflow around the chassis, but a stand is not a substitute for clean vents and manufacturer-approved operating conditions.
Metal stands can feel rigid and conduct heat away from contact points, but material alone does not prove cooling performance. A well-shaped polymer stand can provide adequate support. Judge actual vent clearance, contact area, and stability.
Port and cable access
Raising the laptop changes cable paths. Heavy HDMI, USB-C, power, or Ethernet cables can pull sideways on the computer or stand.
Before choosing a design, map:
- which side each port occupies;
- whether the stand’s arms cover those ports;
- cable length at the highest position;
- how a hub or dock will be supported;
- whether a charging plug bends sharply;
- whether the screen can open fully without contacting a rear bar.
Do not let a hub hang by a short cable from a raised laptop. Support it on the desk or choose a cable length and layout that removes tension from the port.
Laptop plus external monitor
Decide which screen is primary. The primary display should normally sit directly in front. If the external monitor is primary, placing the laptop far to one side can encourage repeated neck rotation. A stand that aligns the laptop beside the monitor can reduce vertical mismatch, but both screens do not need perfectly identical top edges if their sizes and viewing distances differ.
If time is split evenly, keep both within a comfortable field of view. If the laptop shows only chat or reference material, prioritize the external screen’s center position.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Chair and input height can support relaxed shoulders and neutral wrists.
- A separate keyboard and pointing device will be used for sustained work.
- The stand’s height range reaches the measured target.
- Viewing distance and operating-system text scaling remain comfortable.
- Laptop size and weight are within the published limits.
- The stand remains stable at the intended height.
- Retaining lips do not obstruct hands, ports, or the chassis.
- Intake and exhaust vents remain open.
- Cables reach without pulling on the laptop.
- The base leaves enough space for the keyboard and desk workflow.
The best laptop stand is not necessarily the tallest or most adjustable. It is the one that lets the screen, keyboard, mouse, chair, and person form a coherent workstation.
